From the starting gate to the finish line

A number of things took place last month that, on their own, would qualify for the title of this piece and, as I write this intro, I honestly can't decide where to start. I guess chronologically is as good an idea as any, so here goes.

On January 4, the girls' basketball team from the Leffell School, a private Jewish day school in Hartsdale, NY, played on the road against Roosevelt High School in Yonkers.

Everything was hunky-dory until about the end of the third quarter. That's when Leffell girls report that the Roosevelt players became particularly physical…and worse.

According to several players, one of their opponents barked, "I support Hamas, you f***ing Jew!"

Additionally, according to Leffell senior Robin Bosworth, "players on the opposing team started shouting 'Free Palestine' and other antisemitic slurs and curses at us."

After conducting an internal investigation, the Yonkers school district determined that "antisemitic remarks were made against the Leffell School's women's team."

Roosevelt High School principal Edward DeChent apologized for the behavior of his varsity girls’ team.

Roosevelt coach, Bryan Williams, was fired and one player was cut from the team as a result of the incident.

So, nobody at Roosevelt High denied what had taken place. That is except for substitute teacher Frank Coleman, who also happens to be the president of the local NAACP chapter.
