Albert Brooks’ 1991 romantic comedy, “Defending Your Life” tells the story of Daniel Miller, who, after dying in a quite avoidable car accident, finds himself in a fouth-dimensional place called “Judgement City.”
All recently deceased inhabitants of Earth are sent to Judgement City to undergo an evaluation to determine whether they’re ready to “move forward.”
Upon his arrival, Daniel meets his “defender,” a guy named Bob Diamond, who is played by Rip Torn.
When Daniel (Brooks) asks Diamond, “What do you mean, ‘move forward’?”, Diamond responds, “I mean, continue ownward. The point of this whole thing is to keep getting smarter, to use as much as your brain as possible.”
“For example, I use 48% of my brain,” Diamond says, matter-of-factly. “You know how much you use?”
After pausing and fidgeting for a bit, Daniel guesses, “Forty-seven?”
Diamond chuckles briefly before curtly responding, “Three.”
He then goes on to explain to Daniel that, “Being from Earth, as you are, and using as little of your brain as you do, your life has been pretty much devoted to dealing with fear.”
“It has?”
“Everybody on Earth deals with fear,” Bob explains. “That’s what Little Brains do.”
“What are Little Brains?” Daniel asks.
“That’s what we call you folks behind your back.”
Politicians and their campaigns rely on —perhaps more than anything else— the continued participation of Little Brains in the political process. This is, of course, true of both of our major parties in the US. However, it is, without question, the long pole in the tent of the Democrats.
On August 5, Kamala Harris “won” the Democrat nomination through an online vote by party delegates, just as our Founding Fathers envisioned.
Not.
The Little Brains didn’t bother asking how she secured the presidential nomination without ever winning a single primary vote (in 2020 or in 2024).
Little Brains who donated to the Biden campaign are somehow unconcerned with the fact that, by the morning after he stepped aside, the $96 million they’d coughed up to Joe had magically found its way into Harris’ coffers.
